ASSA ABLOY Aperio Cabinet Locks

Several aging products were in need of a design refresh to accommodate a next-gen wireless technology (Aperio®) being developed by ASSA ABLOY. Specifically, they required assistance in executing the design of the K100 cabinet lock, R100 card reader, KS100 server cabinet lock, and the XT safe lock. Of particular concern was infusing ASSA ABLOY’s new visual design language into these products, while using the opportunity to enhance the user experience of each. Luke worked directly with ASSA ABLOY’s US Industrial Design Manager and multiple mechanical and electrical engineering teams to ensure the design was appropriate for all stakeholders.

Each product was designed with key geometric elements to create a family look that fit into the visual brand language. Layered offset faces, strong chamfered edges moving around the volume, and targeted radii in the corners all combined to imbue the product with the perceived security, strength and precision that ASSA ABLOY’s extensive product line represents. Additionally, visual cues and touch points were carefully resolved to ensure an user-friendly and ergonomic experience, and notification lights were strategically integrated to ensure enhance visibility to better communicate critical system functions in the multiple orientations the product is installed.

Luke completed this project while at Veloce Engineering as Lead Industrial Designer.
